6-Step Organic Lawn Care Program

6-Step Organic Lawn Care Program
The 6-Step Organic Lawn Care Program That Outperforms Chemicals

Let's get one thing straight. Organic doesn't mean "less effective." It means more intentional. You're not dumping synthetic cocktails on your soil. You're feeding the biology beneath your feet and letting nature do the heavy lifting. Here's exactly what we do and why it works.

Step 1: Early Spring – Organic Pre-Emergent & Soil Activation

We apply a corn gluten meal-based pre-emergent to stop crabgrass and other weed seeds from germinating naturally. No synthetic barriers. No harsh chemistry. At the same time, we broadcast a slow-release organic fertilizer to wake up the soil microbes. A healthy soil food web means a lawn that crowds out weeds on its own.

Step 2: Spring – Targeted Weed Spot Treatment & Root Feeding

Instead of blanketing your lawn with broadleaf herbicides, we spot-treat visible weeds with an iron-based or vinegar-based organic weed killer. It's contact-only and breaks down fast. Then we follow up with a liquid organic fertilizer like fish hydrolysate or seaweed extract. This feeds the roots directly and gives your grass a deep green color without the burn risk.

Step 3: Late Spring – Organic Weed Prevention & Microbial Boost

We apply a second round of organic pre-emergent (yes, it takes two applications to match synthetic timing) and a compost tea or humic acid drench. This supercharges soil biology. Healthy soil grows grass so thick that weeds can't find a place to land. We also hand-pull or mechanically remove any stubborn weeds that slipped through. It's more work. It's worth it.

Step 4: Early Summer – Beneficial Insect Support & Stress Feeding

We don't nuke bugs. We encourage the good ones. We apply beneficial nematodes or neem oil to target surface insects like chinch bugs and sod webworms without harming pollinators. Then we feed your lawn with a low-nitrogen organic fertilizer to help it handle heat stress. A strong lawn fights off pests naturally.

Step 5: Late Summer / Early Fall – Weed Cleanup & Root Building

We go through the lawn and spot-treat any remaining broadleaf weeds. Then we apply an organic fall fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium – think bone meal or rock phosphate blended with compost. This isn't about pushing top growth. It's about building a root system that survives winter and explodes in spring.

Step 6: Late Fall – Organic Winterizer & Soil Protection

We apply a final round of organic fertilizer with a heavy potassium source. This strengthens cell walls and improves cold tolerance. We also top-dress with a thin layer of finished compost. This protects the soil over winter, feeds earthworms, and gives your lawn a head start without any synthetic crutches.

Optional Organic Services
(For Clients Who Want the Full System)
  • Early Spring & Fall Organic Lime/Sulfur: Based on a soil test. We adjust pH using only OMRI-listed products, so your organic program practically works.
  • Summer Organic Nutsedge Control: We use corn gluten meal spot-treatment or manual removal. No synthetic chemicals are required.
  • Fall Core Aeration: Relieves compaction so oxygen and water can reach organic root zones.
  • Fall Organic Thatching: We remove thatch mechanically and follow up with compost tea to repopulate the soil with decomposers.
  • Fall Organic Slit Seeding: We use non-coated, non-treated seed varieties that thrive in living soil.
  • Summer Organic Grub Control: Beneficial nematodes applied at the right time stop grubs without harming bees, birds, or your family.
